The Austin economy and social life of the 60’s and 70’s was based upon employment for the State of Texas (state jobs) and the University of Texas. The Eanes School District consisted of one school, Eanes Elementary School. We kids were bussed into the Austin School District and attended O. Henry Junior High School and Austin High School (the old building downtown where ACC has classes now).
Life was much slower. My friends and I made forts in the woods and participated in spear grass fights. We skated on the concrete foundation of the new house being built in our neighborhood. There were three channels available on our TV (two were San Antonio channels). There were no malls. Everyone shopped downtown. Going to the movies meant the State or Paramount Theaters. We would sneak in hamburgers from Woolworth’s lunch counter. My brother and his friends rode bikes all over town. Who knew where they were? Why worry?
Even though I have traveled extensively, I still believe Austin is the most interesting city to live. As soon as I was able to drive, I began exploring the parks, lakes, and festivities around town. My favorite pool during high school was Barton Springs. My favorite park was the LCRA Park by Mansfield Dam. Some festivities have been going on for years: Zilker Trail of Lights, Blues on the Green, Old Settler’s Music Festival, Zilker Kite Festival and the Capitol 10,000 marathon. Others festivals have started more recently: Bat Fest, Austin Film Festival, SXSW, ACL Music Festival, Hot Sauce Festival, Austin Food & Wine Festival, etc.
With all of the outdoor activities and interesting “goings on” in Austin, why consider living anywhere else?
